Often, when a trauma occurs, it happens to the family and not just the person. The truth is, traumatic events or traumatic histories affect everyone! If the family has endured a traumatic event together, or if they have had to support a family member who has gone through a trauma, it is imperative that everyone receives the education and support they need – not just the individual.
For this, Healthworx Family Services supports clients and their families in understanding the impact that trauma can have on familial relationships. Family members hearing traumatic stories, witnessing the traumatic event, or supporting a family member in their treatment can lead to those family members experiencing secondary trauma symptoms.
Secondary Trauma is defined as “exposure to the trauma of others by providers, family members, partners or friends in close contact with the traumatized individual.” Although termed “secondary”, its effects can be as debilitating as the primary trauma.
Our program provides support and education helping family members take care of themselves, their children, and their partners. Emphasis is placed on skill building such as self-care, self-understanding, relationship building, and interpersonal communication.
